
Maison Moderne testimonial : Digital: An Essential Ally for the HR Function
Nathalie Bourdeau, DHR at Maison Moderne – the publishing group behind the media Paperjam – discusses the major challenges faced by HR and the importance of digital tools, highlighting Microtis' Gesper solution, which helps her meet those challenges.
“I have a rather unconventional background. Before moving into human resources, I spent a large part of my career in IT. I’ve always had a strong interest in digital technology,” begins Nathalie Bourdeau. Her transition from IT to HR was a gradual one. “I moved to Luxembourg when I joined an IT consultancy. From there, I became increasingly interested in quality-related aspects, which eventually led me to team management and human relations,” she continues. In 2023, she joined Maison Moderne – a company with 110 employees – as Human Resources Director.
“Any HR Director will tell you: our main challenges are attracting, retaining, and developing talent. But we can only rise to those challenges if the core services expected of HR—such as administration, payroll, and leave management—are operating smoothly,” she explains. “And for that, digital tools are essential. These processes are becoming more and more complex, and managing them effectively with basic Excel spreadsheets is no longer feasible.”
Supporting Day-to-Day Operations
At her previous roles, Nathalie Bourdeau always prioritised the digitalisation of HR, using her IT background to implement effective HR information systems. “When I arrived at Maison Moderne, the company was already aware of the importance of digital tools and had adopted Gesper, the HR information system developed by Microtis,” she notes.
Thanks to its centralised data management, Gesper allows many HR processes to be automated or streamlined, including absence management, leave tracking, updating personal data, payroll calculation, and providing employees with access to the information they need. “Before we can focus on strategic matters, we need to ensure that all these essential processes are handled properly,” she emphasises. “No one claps when payroll is processed each month, but if we can’t ensure everyone is paid accurately and on time, there’s no point trying to tackle broader issues.”
Enabling Strategic Decision-Making
At Maison Moderne, beyond supporting day-to-day HR operations, Gesper also assists HR managers in addressing the company’s strategic priorities. “The tool offers better insight into how the company is functioning and employee engagement, thanks to the indicators it provides. This helps improve oversight and facilitates decision-making,” explains Nathalie Bourdeau. “In addition, we’ve implemented the Training and Evaluation modules.”
The Training module keeps track of employee participation in internal training sessions, making it much easier to compile the application for public co-financing of continuous professional development from the INFPC.

Supporting Employee Development
“At Maison Moderne, we decided to move away from annual performance reviews in favour of monthly coaching sessions,” says Nathalie Bourdeau. “Microtis consultants helped us adapt the Evaluation module to support this new approach. Thanks to the tool, every employee is invited each month to reflect on several key aspects: their alignment with the company’s values and five core impacts of their role. In this way, the system enables a dynamic and personalised follow-up throughout the year. In direct collaboration with their manager, each employee can regularly identify actions to help them grow within the company, achieve their goals, and continuously improve.”
